Atrial Fibrillation and hypertension: a pre-destined match?

Hypertension is a well-known risk factor for atrial fibrillation; hypertensive patients have a 1.7 fold higher risk of developing atrial fibrillation compared to normotensive patients. Hypertension induces an atrial cardiomyopathy which in turn promotes development of atrial fibrillation by triggering ectopic and re-entry activity. The goal of this presentation is to explain the 1) pathogenesis of atrial fibrillation in the hypertensive patients and 2) anti-arrhythmic mechanisms of hypertension treatment modalities.
