Screening for atrial fibrillation to reduce the risk of stroke

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) commonly occurs with hypertension, and is associated with a 5x greater risk of stroke.¹ With effective treatment, the risk of stroke can be reduced.²,³ However, up to 50% of AFib cases present with no subjective symptoms, making it unlikely to detect in an annual physical exam.⁴

Nocturnal hypertension

Nocturnal hypertension is associated with higher cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. It can lead, amongst others, to stroke, heart failure and myocardial infarction.

Wheezing challenges identification

Wheezing is a condition that is very common in paediatric practice. Wheeze is often associated with asthma, but it may also be indicative of something else. It is a continous musical sound, high-pitched, during breath exhalation due to abnormal narrowed or compressed airways. Almost 50% of children experiences wheeze in their first 6 years of life, and 40% of them will eventually report conitinued wheezing symptoms after childhood.5
